Bad Images From Photoshoot 27-04-21

(fig.1) untitled by Paris Naik-Neenan

In figure one, the effect I intended for worked perfectly, which was to blow out the highlights of details from the model while keeping the shadows and highlights elements of the background. To create an ethereal impression of a female figure, I wanted the viewer to focus on the emotion the model’s gestures portray. Still, the motions in figure one are not performing the right sentiment for this image as I was aiming for despair and isolation. Still, their relaxed demeanour seems to suggest more of a carefree, happy atmosphere. Therefore I will not use this image as one of my final images despite the aesthetic meeting my expectations, but it does not portray the right emotion.

In figure two, the same issue with the emotional tone of the image did not work as the model’s pose seemed insouciant and untroubled, which is the opposite mood I was attempting to capture. Another issue with this image is that the light has completely blown out the details of the sand on the ground, making it difficult to see the edge of the model’s dress, and ruining the model’s silhouette. After speaking to my mother about the images, she said they did not feel like they represented the isolation she felt when she was sectioned and separated from me and everyone else she knew. Before the photo shoot, we discussed why she used a door as a metaphor for her emotions, she said that an open door is meant to symbolise her unconditional love for herself and me, and a closed door symbolises isolation and despair.
