Best Image From Photoshoot 27-04-21

(fig.1) untitled by Paris Naik-Neenan

In figure one, the subject leans back with their arms behind their back, facing toward the sky, which demonstrates a state of tension within the subject, symbolising my mother’s state of mind of being contorted, twisted and pulled in one direction while seeking to head in the opposite direction. The contortion of the subject’s body connotes the pressure to conform to behaving and feeling in one constant state that fits within the societal purview of ‘normal’ behaviour but fighting against that to achieve what one wants the most held out of reach.

My mother suggests that the image represents multiple things; at first, it depicts an exhausted woman drained of all emotion and life, barely able to hold herself up. Still, at a second glance, it shows a woman taking a deep breath pulling herself upwards towards hope showing there’s a chance to thrive and feel alive.

The overexposed model contrasts against the night sky’s shadowy background, symbolising the darkness that swamps one’s mind when feeling hopeless and depressed. Speaking to my mother, I learned that she views this perspective as if she’s aware that she is her last and only hope to overcome everything that burdens her.
