Initial Ideas: Jane Haze’s Gig

For this final shoot, my goal is to capture publicity shots of my musician during her concert that will make up for the unsatisfactory results of the previous shoot, even though she was happy with them.

To achieve this, I have been giving a lot of thought to how to create a similar atmosphere to the images above, as well as those of Florence + The Machine’s concert imagery, while also adding my unique touch. To do this, I intend to employ diverse techniques to attain the ideal shots.

One technique that I plan to experiment with is capturing a low-angle perspective of the musician to evoke the spiritual power that her music exudes. I hope that this will create a sense of awe and reverence in the viewer, similar to, but not identical to, a religious experience. In addition, I will aim to achieve a blurry effect, similar to the studio images, by using a slower shutter speed ranging from 1/125 to 1/80, to obtain a combination of clear and blurry images. By experimenting with different shutter speeds and angles, I hope to capture a range of images that truly capture the essence of the musician’s performance.

The image in the middle demonstrates a technique I would like to attempt, where I capture the subject using a slow shutter speed while quickly zooming out before the shutter closes. However, I understand that attempting to control any variables during a concert like a musician staying in one spot, would pose a challenge to achieving this type of shot.

Other aspects to consider when shooting at Jane Haze’s gig include using the lowest f-stop settings and the face-tracking focus on my camera to capture the musician’s emotions during the performance. I aim to capture those in-between moments of performing and the audience’s reaction, but it was an incredibly tiny space; I may not have different perspectives of the musician or be able to include the crowd without drawing attention away from the performers. However, by visiting the venue beforehand, scouting out the best vantage points and figuring out the venue’s lighting, I hope to capture stunning shots that showcase the musician and her performance.
